Express and Share Through Art

18 July 2013 - 6 October 2013

‘Art Therapy allows you to discover what you didn’t know was there. It gives you the chance to explore things you wouldn’t normally look at.’ – Participant

‘Art Psychotherapy doesn’t have any hard edges.’ – Participant

The work in this exhibition explores feelings, thoughts and life experiences using art and art therapy as modes of communication.

Participants were referred from Tees Esk Wear Valley NHS Trust and worked in mima education space over three months with local Artist and Art Psychotherapist Kelly Jayne. All participants were invited to submit a piece of work made within the sessions as a way to tell their stories, encourage empowerment and help to de-stigmatise mental health.

‘Art Psychotherapy enables self-expression when communication through words is too difficult. Creativity is everyone’s right and can be a non-intimidating form of language that is manageable particularly for people with mental ill health.’
Kelly Jayne

Kelly Jayne and Shaun Wassall are members of the British Association of Art Therapy and are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Express and Share Through Art was funded by The Arts Council and supported by mima.
