Questions of Belonging

23 November 2010 - 13 March 2011
L.S.Lowry The Old Town Hall and St Hildas Church Middlesbrough, 1959. Presented by the Friends of the Middlesbrough Art Gallery, 1960

Questions of Belonging has seen mima turn the tables on the people of Middlesbrough and has asked them to curate its winter show. The gallery teamed up with the Evening Gazette in Middlesbrough to discover The People’s Choice – the 10 most popular pieces from the gallery’s collection. The Evening Gazette published details of 50 pieces from mima’s collection with readers picking their Top 10 via an on-line vote at www.gazettelive. co.uk.

The mima/Evening Gazette initiative also saw five apprentices recruited to work with the gallery team to select, curate and install additional works. Presenting new works and old favourites, this exhibition takes a fresh look at the collection through the eyes of Middlesbrough residents.

The show includes work by Frank Auerbach, Gijs Bakker, Peter Blake, John Bratby, Giovanni Corvaja, Ken Currie, LS Lowry, Chad McCail, Glynn Porteous, Lucie Rie, Bridget Riley, David Shrigley, Chris Wood, Richard Wright, Gésine Hackenberg amongst others.
