We are closed.

Following the latest Government advice in light of the rapidly-changing situation around the coronavirus in the UK, we have taken the decision to close MIMA to the public from Tuesday 17 March 2020. This is in the best interests of all our visitors and our staff.  We will keep this under constant review and will share updates with you regarding reopening on our website mima.art and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at @mimauseful.

Our provision for MIMA School of Art & Design students remains open and students should visit:https://www.tees.ac.uk/sections/about/university/coronavirus.cfm for updates on learning and support.

Take care.

MIMA Team

Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art has a civic agenda to put art into action. We connect art, people and ideas. We work with communities to address current issues within politics, economics and culture. Our programmes encompass urgent themes such as climate change, migration, inequality, ageing and wellbeing.

We offer changing exhibitions, collection displays, learning activities, projects and community-focused initiatives that involve many artists and publics. These programmes promote creativity for everyone in ordinary life, through education, debate and making.Part of Teesside University, we play a key role in the cultural life of the Tees Valley and wider North East. Our ambition is that a range of constituents shape who we are: a public site, open and accessible, diverse and inclusive and used by all.

Black Lives Matter

MIMA is an anti-racist institution. We have a long-standing commitment to equity and we oppose injustice. Over the past weeks, months and years, we have spent time listening, reading, reflecting and absorbing. We have undertaken meaningful work which has helped us see just how much more is possible.

Across the next two weeks we are holding open sessions to talk about Black Lives Matter with our staff team. We want to ensure that commitments we make moving forward are owned and invested in from across our team.

The galvanising force of the last few weeks shows that transformation must come and we are committed to making change.
