Displaced performance

19 October 2015 12:00 pm - 19 October 2015 1:00 pm

‘Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.’ Performance with the artist, 2005

Join artist Richard Henderson for this one-hour performance where visitors are invited to permanently swap the clothes they are wearing with the artist. The piece aims to encourage viewers to become active participants in order to experience a sense of displacement.

Throughout the encounters, the artist invites contributors into conversations around the significance of their clothes and, in particular, how narratives around what we wear communicate our sense of self. The emerging dialogue examines the links between clothing and identity and suggests a process of cultural assimilation.

Upon completion of a swap, the artist wears the visitors’ clothes throughout the rest of the performance until another swap occurs. All swaps will be recorded and displayed on the gallery plasma screen throughout the duration of the exhibition.

The first performance took place on Monday 12 October. Here are some photos from the session.
